We use "used to" and "would" to talk about past habits or repeated actions that no longer happen now. Sometimes both options might be correct in one sentence, and sometimes only "used to." Let's start with examples of "used to." We can say: I used to live in Dnipro, but I moved to London last year. When he was at school, he used to golf every day. She used to hate her job until she got a promotion. All these sentences describe actions or situations in the past that are now finished. Life in Dnipro, playing golf, hating the job - they're all completed. "Used to" is used to describe past habits or states that were true in the past but are no longer true. It indicates a regular action or state in the past that doesn't happen anymore. For example: Habit: I used to play the piano when I was younger. (I played the piano regularly in the past, but I don't play it now.) State: She used to live in New York. (She lived in New York in the past, but she doesn't live there anymore.) Moving on to "would": When he was at university, he would sleep until noon at the weekends. My sister lived in Australia for many years, but she would always come home for Christmas. 1. "Would" is used to describe repeated actions or habits in the past that were typical or customary, but it is not used for describing states. It's not used with verbs describing feelings, emotions, states, and other non-continuous verbs: be, love, hate, dislike, like, believe, understand, etc., and with the verb "live." When I was a student, I used to love sleeping late on the weekends. (natural and grammatical) When I was a student, I would love sleeping late on weekends. (awkward and ungrammatical) 2. As per The Britannica Dictionary, the difference between "used to" and "would" is that "would" should not be used unless the time frame in the past is established at the beginning of the sentence for a repeated action, while "used to" doesn't require this. Examples: I would watch cartoons every Saturday morning when I was very little. Now I rarely watch TV. When I was little, I would get up and watch cartoons every Saturday morning. Now I rarely watch TV. Let's review the examples again: Used to: Habitual actions: She used to dance ballet when she was a child. They used to have picnics in the park every Sunday. States in the past: He used to be a chef before he became a teacher. The house used to be painted blue, but now it's white. Past routines: I used to walk to school every day. They used to spend their summer holidays at the seaside. Would: Repeated actions: Every Friday, they would watch a movie together. The cat would always sit on the windowsill and watch the birds. Customary actions: He would bring her a cup of coffee every morning. She would tell stories to her grandchildren before bedtime. Past habits: When he was nervous, he would bite his nails. She would always sing in the shower. This video will help you understand the topic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIizRJT6tIA&t=25s
